Abstract

Quranic literacy among adults is a dynamic and challenging lifelong learning process that transcends technical, cognitive, and affective dimensions, yet it is often hindered by a significant literacy gap caused by time constraints, age, and psychosocial stigmas, such as shame among professionals and retirees which traditional methods fail to address. This study explores the influence of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation on the enhancement of Quranic literacy through the lenses of Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and the ARCS Model. SDT emphasizes three basic psychological needs; autonomy, qualitative case study design at the Dar al-Qari institution, data were collected through in-depth interviews with 11 adult participants selected via purposive sampling. The data were analysed thematically to identify motivational patterns, learning experiences, and their impact on the participants' literacy levels. Findings indicate that empathetic teacher leadership, the influence of social media as a catalyst for awareness, and an Islamic environment that supports autonomy and social relatedness are critical factors for literacy sustainability. Social media serves as an initial extrinsic driver that normalises Quranic learning among professionals, retirees, and homemakers, while teachers who practice Islamic andragogy and a non-judgmental approach sustain students' long-term commitment. The impact encompasses not only technical dimensions (tilawah) but also comprehension (tafahhum) and practice (tatbiq) as agents of psychospiritual healing, particularly in managing anxiety and life stress. This study contributes to the enrichment of adult Quranic literacy discourse by proposing a learning ecosystem model that integrates digital marketing strategies, teacher leadership, and a compassionate (rahmah) Islamic environment to support sustainable lifelong literacy.
