A Glimpse of Hospitality Etiquette in Light of the Story of Abraham's Honored Guests

Abstract

Islam encourages hospitality to the extent that it becomes a characteristic of faith and a social right among people. This is because it fosters positive social relations, deepening brotherhood and love, and enhancing communication and solidarity. Its importance is underscored in numerous Qur’anic verses, notably in the story of Prophet Abraham’s hospitality to the honorable angels, which carries within it many lessons in the art of hospitality. The researcher observed a lack of proper understanding of hospitality etiquette in our contemporary reality, where some people are often preoccupied with material gains rather than Islamic morals. Consequently, hospitality is often neglected or abandoned. To address this issue, the research aims to extract the etiquette of hospitality contained in the story of Ibrahim’s hospitable guests and analyze its essential elements. To achieve this goal, the researcher employed an inductive, analytical, and then deductive method. The findings presented in this article are the outcomes of a thematic analysis of literature obtained from Qur'ānic exegesis. Finally, the author has managed to extract six general etiquettes and fifty partial etiquettes, including: (1) Honoring the guest and showing kindness in treatment, comprising eight partial etiquettes; (2) Responding to the guest's greeting in a better manner, with seven partial etiquettes; (3) Promptness and eagerness in offering hospitality, with seven partial etiquettes; (4) Providing the guest with quality food, with eleven partial etiquettes; (5) Serving food to the guest in their place, with five partial etiquettes; (6) Offering food to the guest and encouraging them to eat gently, with twelve partial etiquettes. Moreover, hospitality in Islam transcends mere provision of food and drink; it is an art that embodies numerous values, including honor, appreciation, altruism, solidarity, humility, brotherhood, and cooperation.
